Cara Junior School caters for pupils aged 4-12 years with a dual diagnosis of Autism and a mild or moderate intellectual disability. The school was set up in 2011 by the Department of Education and Science. The school is under the patronage of the Brothers of Charity. We are located in Mayfield, Cork City. The school day is 9.10-2.50 p.m.
Cara J.S, provides a learning environment in which each child can develop according to their individual needs. A variety of Autism-specific methodologies including TEACCH, PECS, Sensory Regulation, Social Stories, communication boards and Lámh are implemented in order to access the Primary School Curriculum that is delivered across the school.
Each class is taught by a fully qualified teacher working with a team of 3 Special Needs Assistants. Learning activities are carefully structured and clear visual cues are used to scaffold learning.

This school received a grant in 2021 to implement initiatives aimed at addressing the digital divide and support our learners at risk of educational disadvantage as a consequence, as part of the Irish National Recovery and Resilience Plan (NRRP) a project under the Recovery and Resilience Facility funded by the European Union through Next Generation EU. This funding was used to purchase interactive whiteboards which help to engage our pupils with the primary curriculum.
